In short: FRP grating weight is quoted as weight per unit area, in kg/m² or lb/ft². To estimate a panel, multiply its area by that figure. Weight depends mainly on depth (thickness), mesh, resin content and surface finish, so always use the figure for the exact product you are buying. As an example of published data, one major manufacturer lists its 38 × 38 mm (1-1/2 × 1-1/2 in) square-mesh molded grating at about 2.5 lb/ft² (about 12.2 kg/m²) at 25 mm (1 in) deep and about 3.8 lb/ft² (about 18.6 kg/m²) at 38 mm (1-1/2 in) deep. Other makers list about 19.5 kg/m² for 38 × 38 × 38 mm, so plan on roughly 18–20 kg/m² and use the figure on your quote. FIBROVX confirms the weight of every panel we quote on the quotation and packing list.

Why grating weight matters
Low weight is one of the main reasons engineers choose FRP grating. It affects a project in four practical ways:
- Manual handling. Many FRP panels can be carried and positioned by a small crew without lifting equipment. Your site's manual handling rules decide what a team may lift; weight per panel tells you whether a panel size fits those rules.
- Supporting structure. Grating weight is part of the dead load on beams, brackets and existing structures. On refurbishment projects, a lighter floor can leave more capacity for live load.
- Freight. Shipping cost depends on both weight and volume. FRP grating is light for its volume, so a container is often limited by space before weight. Knowing both lets you plan containers accurately.
- Installation speed. Lighter panels are faster to move, cut and fix, especially at height or in confined areas.

What decides the weight of FRP grating

Depth (thickness)
Deeper grating has taller bars and more material per square meter. In the published example above, moving from 25 mm to 38 mm deep raises the weight from about 12.2 to about 18.6 kg/m² for the same mesh.
Mesh size
Smaller openings mean more bars per meter and therefore more material. Mini-mesh and micro-mesh grating is heavier than standard square mesh of the same depth. See FRP Grating Mesh Sizes.
Molded or pultruded
Molded grating is a one-piece grid with a high resin content. Pultruded grating uses bearing bars with high glass content connected by cross rods. Its weight depends on bar shape, bar spacing and depth. Compare the two types on a like-for-like load and span, not on weight alone. See Molded vs Pultruded FRP Grating.
Resin, glass and fillers
The ratio of glass to resin, and any fillers or fire-retardant additives, change density slightly. Your supplier's figure should already include these.
Surface finish and top plates
Grit-top surfaces add a bonded layer of aggregate. Covered (solid-top) grating adds a top plate, which adds noticeably more weight than an open top. See FRP Grating Surface Options.
How to estimate panel weight
The calculation is simple:
Panel weight = panel length × panel width × weight per unit area
- Get the weight per unit area for the exact depth, mesh, type and surface from the supplier's datasheet or quotation.
- Work out the panel area in m² (or ft²).
- Multiply.
- For the order total, multiply by the number of panels and add the weight of clips, fixings and packing.
Worked example (published data, for illustration)

| Step | Value |
|---|---|
| Panel size | 1220 × 3660 mm (4 × 12 ft) |
| Area | 1.22 × 3.66 = 4.47 m² (48 ft²) |
| Published weight (38 mm deep, 38 × 38 mm mesh) | about 3.8 lb/ft² (about 18.6 kg/m²) |
| Panel weight | 48 × 3.8 ≈ 182 lb, or 4.47 × 18.6 ≈ 83 kg |
This example uses a manufacturer's published value, not FIBROVX data. Our panels are made to your specification, and we state the weight of each panel type in the quotation.
Unit conversions
| From | To | Multiply by |
|---|---|---|
| lb/ft² | kg/m² | 4.882 |
| kg/m² | lb/ft² | 0.2048 |
| ft² | m² | 0.0929 |
| lb | kg | 0.4536 |
Example: 2.5 lb/ft² × 4.882 ≈ 12.2 kg/m².
Weight and load capacity are different things
A heavier panel is not automatically a stronger one. Load capacity depends on depth, bar geometry, glass content and span. Choose the grating from its load table first, using your span, load and deflection limit. Then use weight for handling, structure and freight checks. See FRP Grating Span and Load Tables.
Planning shipping
- Ask for both weight and volume. We provide gross weight and packed dimensions for each crate or pallet.
- Panel size affects packing. Standard panel sizes pack efficiently. Cut-to-size pieces may need extra packing to protect edges.
- Mixed orders. Grating is often shipped with handrail, ladders or profiles. Give us the full list so we can plan one load.
- Destination handling. Tell us if your site has no forklift; we can size crates for the equipment you have.
Customization
FIBROVX makes FRP grating to order. We can supply different depths, mesh patterns, surfaces, colors and panel sizes, and cut panels to your drawing. If weight is a constraint, for example for manual handling on a roof or offshore, tell us the maximum panel weight and we will propose panel sizes that meet it. See FRP molded grating and pultruded grating.

Request a QuoteCommon mistakes
- Using a generic weight. Weight varies with depth, mesh and surface. Use the figure for the exact product.
- Forgetting the top plate or grit. Covered and grit-top grating weigh more than open, plain tops.
- Choosing by weight instead of load. Select from the load table first.
- Ignoring volume. FRP freight is often volume-limited, not weight-limited.
- Leaving out accessories. Clips, fixings, handrail and packing add to the shipment weight.
Key terms
- Weight per unit area: Weight of grating per square meter or square foot of panel.
- Dead load: The permanent weight of the grating and fixed parts, carried by the supports.
- Gross weight: Weight of goods plus packing, used for freight.
- Depth: Overall height of the grating bars.
FAQ
How much does FRP grating weigh?
It depends on the product. As published examples, one manufacturer lists 38 × 38 mm square-mesh molded grating at about 12.2 kg/m² at 25 mm deep and about 18.6 kg/m² at 38 mm deep. Ask for the figure for the exact product you are buying.
How do I calculate the weight of a panel?
Multiply panel area by the weight per unit area for that product, then add accessories and packing for the shipment total.
Is pultruded grating lighter than molded grating?
It can be, for the same load and span, because pultruded bearing bars have high glass content. Compare both types on the same load and span using their load tables.
Does a grit surface add much weight?
It adds some weight. A covered top plate adds more. Use the weight for the surface you specify.
Can you limit panel weight for manual handling?
Yes. Tell us the maximum panel weight and we will propose panel sizes and layouts that meet it.
Do you provide weights for shipping?
Yes. Our packing list gives the net and gross weight and dimensions of each package.
