Cover an existing tread surface

A tread cover fits over an existing step; it is distinct from a structural stair tread. Describe the existing stair material and condition, as well as the area to be covered.

  • Existing tread width, depth and front-edge dimensions.
  • Existing stair material, surface condition and any damaged areas.
  • Full-step coverage, front-edge return and any corner or cut-out details.
  • Proposed mechanical fixing or adhesive requirements.
  • Surface finish, visual contrast and any slip-test evidence required for the project.

Covers are surface overlays, not replacements for missing or damaged load-bearing treads. The existing stairs and fixing surfaces must be suitable for the installation.
